Our achievements are garnered through our core strengths: superior execution, financial strength, unrivaled global information systems, excellent management and work force, and unparalleled market coverage. Our revenues for 1996 hit a record $12 billion -- a 39-percent increase over 1995's $8.6 billion. Our successful initial public offering in November 1996 raised $392 million. With these and other achievements, and our core competencies, we are primed to expand our relationships with the customers, suppliers and communities we serve.
Resellers voted Ingram Micro as their most preferred distributor for the fourth year in a row in the 12th annual Computer Reseller News (CRN) survey. CRN also asked 12,000 resellers to rate distributors' performances in 11 categories -- from delivery accuracy to pre- and post-sale support to product availability. Of the more than 250 distributors in the United States, Ingram Micro received the highest marks. Why? Because we continually bring customers the latest products and services.
Ingram Micro is the result of a 1989 merger between Ingram Computer and Micro D. Ingram Computer began as Software Distribution Services (SDS), founded in Buffalo, N.Y. In the spring of 1985, Ingram Distribution Group -- a unit of the multifaceted Ingram Industries -- acquired SDS and renamed it Ingram Software. In December 1985, Ingram Software acquired Softeam, a distributor based in Compton, Calif. The companies' combined operations were named Ingram Computer in 1988. Micro D was founded in July 1979 in Santa Ana, Calif. Ingram Computer began acquiring Micro D stock in 1986 and had purchased all shares of the company by 1989. The new company -- Ingram Micro D, then renamed Ingram Micro -- gained market share rapidly. This successful merger produced the industry's first billion-dollar wholesale distribution company, foreshadowing our success today.
Our worldwide presence also began in 1989 with the acquisition of Softeurop, a software distributor based in Brussels, Belgium. We since have strengthened our worldwide presence through the addition of affiliates in 16 countries. Ingram Micro serves other worldwide locations through export offices, reaching 5,400 customers in more than 100 countries.
