BackWeb Technologies is the leading provider of enterprise push software solutions for the Internet and corporate intranets/extranets. Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive broadcast technology available so that companies can easily get started with push, then grow their capabilities to best meet their needs.
Target Markets
BackWeb targets companies serious about using the Internet, their intranet or their extranets in new, strategic ways. For example, on the intranet/extranet side, companies are using BackWeb to develop streamlined internal operations, to provide executive information systems for senior management in geographically disperse corporations, to shorten the delivery cycles with suppliers. On the Internet, companies are using BackWeb to provide complete electronic commerce systems, sponsorships that include offline tracking of viewers, subscriptions and customer retention.
Product Family
The BackWeb family of products provides a full range of features and tools required by channel providers, MIS managers and end users to define and manage Internet and intranet channels. The client/server technology allows companies to develop highly adaptable channels that send any information (not just Web-based information)…from any publisher…to any source whether it is an internet, intranet or extranet…through any connection (HTTP, real-time via TIBCO, or 14.4 and 28.8 modems)…finding users wherever they are…without interrupting their work unless they want it to. BackWeb has a range of industrial strength management and control capabilities for the channel providers which include the ability to do personalization…to have complete branding control…to assign live attributes to the data, such as play dates and expiration dates…to manage the content in a secure fashion …and to scale to millions of users. Finally, BackWeb is pioneering a new approach to push, called Polite Push, that is respectful of other work that is happening within the organization, so that it minimizes the impact on the enterprises' Internet bandwidth and network.
Business Model
The company's business model is to generate revenue primarily through the license of server products and other tools to enable organizations to build their own broadcast channels both externally to end users in the consumer marketplace and internally to members of the organization. In order to accelerate market acceptance, the company distributes its client software free of charge to Internet users through a variety of distribution channels.
History
BackWeb is a spin-off of BRM Technologies, a technology R&D incubator who specializes in developing products for emerging markets and was one of the first companies to create antivirus, backup, and firewall products. BRM has developed technology for Norton, Symantec, and Phoenix among others. In addition, BRM co-founded Check Point Software Technologies, the leading company in the firewall market. Another recent spin-off of BRM is MediaPath, a company that provides CD-ROM tracking capabilities.
Work on the BackWeb product line was started in February 1995 and BackWeb itself was co-founded in October 1995 by its Chief Architects, Lior Hass and Iftah Sneh.
Investment
BRM Technolgies funded BackWeb's initial product development. Additional investors include Goldman Sachs, SoftBank Corporation, the partners at Broadview Associates, Trinity and Polaris.
